Disconnect in Damascus

Today's ironic statement of the day comes from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad:

"You have to be very closely linked to the beliefs of the people," the younger al-Assad told the Wall Street Journal in January. "When there is divergence between your policy and the people's beliefs and interests, (it) creates disturbance," he said.

As the AlJazeera commentator says, this weeks footage speaks for itself:

So what actually brings leaders to the point where they decide to fire on their own people? Is the desire to maintain your grip on absolute power that intoxicating? Do you rationalize to yourself that no matter what, your country is better with you in power? (If I step down my country will just become another Iraq!)  Or is it something else entirely?
